Kentucky has a variety of landscapes from the rolling hills and horse farms of the Bluegrass, the caves and classic karst landscape of the Pennyroyal Plateau, the swampland of the Jackson Purchase, and the rugged hills and mountains of Eastern Kentucky there is a lot of character in the Bluegrass state. We have your Springfield’s Richmond’s and Marion’s like other towns have, but we also have some very unique and creative town names. This post will highlight some of these more unique town names.
Monkey’s Eyebrow:
Located in Ballard County in far western Kentucky is the small community of Monkey’s Eyebrow. It is named such because of the shape that the meander of the Ohio River makes. It is said to resemble a Monkey’s Eyebrow. Why a monkey and not a human or other animals eyebrow, I am not sure? I am sure that it would be a little bit too unique if it was named Human’s Eyebrow but it would likely get a lot more attention if it had gone that route. The town does have a transmit from the WPSD TV Station out of Paducah located nearby.

Possum Trot:
Located along US 62 between Paducah and Calvert City is a place where the possums don’t walk, don’t run, don’t skip but they do trot.
Rabbit Hash:
This town not only has a unique name but it also has Mayor Brynn. Mayor Brynn runs on the platform of peace, love, and understanding. Mayor Brynn is unique in that she is a dog. Rabbit Hash has had several canine mayors that have ruled this Boone County town of 300 people. This town was named after survivors of the 1816 flood needed food to eat and when they saw a bunch of rabbits on the nearby hills they decided to have some Rabbit Hash and to name the community after that.

Thousandsticks:
This town is in a very scenic area located in Leslie County. The town currently has a church and an intersection with the Hal Rogers Parkway. This town was named after explorers came upon hundred’s of dead trees in the area that may have been the result of a wildfire. To them, it reminded them of a thousand sticks and the unique name stuck to this day. This town used to have a post office but it shut down in 2005.

Big Beaver Lick/Sugar Tit:
Boone County Kentucky in the northern part of the state is a treasure cove of towns with unique names. There was such as town known as sugar tit, which is named after an old-time pacifier made by tying some sugar into a handkerchief or something similar. Big Beaver Lick nearby is named after natural licks (deposits of salts and minerals) that animals liked to lick and supposedly, in this case, a big beaver. See these towns have perfectly rationed names and were not made by someone whose mind was in the gutter, I promise.
Here is some more information on these towns and some other interesting named Northern Kentucky towns in that general area.
