Top Western KY Events: #33- Christian/Northern Todd F/EF-3 Tornado of 4/2/2006

The picture came from News Channel 5 (Out of Nashville), this large tornado (1/3rd of a mile wide at its peak was caught on the Skycam).

A very strong low-pressure system moved across Iowa and into the Great Lakes, this brought a strong cold front along the area. In addition, very similar to the Providence/Nebo tornado there was also a shortwave (a smaller wave of energy) that occurred out ahead of the front, which spawned supercell thunderstorms. The main supercell in our area tracked from just south of Paducah and passed across Christian/Todd/Logan Counties. In addition to that widespread 60-80MPH winds swept across our Evansville Tri-State counties with a derecho.

Why Was This Event Significant

  • This tornado produced 28 injuries (thankfully no deaths) especially as it moved across the Sinking Fort area of NW Christian County and the Hopkinsville outskirts.
  • Over 240 homes in Christian and Todd County were destroyed or heavily damaged, with hundreds of others impacted as well as hundreds of trees. This caused around 37 million dollars in damage in 2006 dollars, which is around 58 million in 2024 dollars. This tornado would rank in the Top-8 (maybe even Top-5) as the most damaging tornado (as far as monetary damages).
