Teaching During the Pandemic: Ride The Wave

Teaching During the Pandemic: Ride The Wave

I teach at a rural district in Western Kentucky and being a teacher has been quite an adventure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each week I will go over a quick summary of my week as a teacher.

This past week was my first week of school as I begin my second year of teaching. Overall this week was about our safe at school guidelines, preparing for the school year, and discussing any gaps from the previous school year.

Overall, it was great to see my fellow teachers and staff as well as meeting the new faces that will be my teammates during the adventure that is teaching during COVID-19.

Overall at the end of this week the phrase “Ride the Wave” comes to mind. It is easy to worry about things such as

Are we going virtual? How am I going to do labs? How can I ensure that I cover any gaps they may have had last year? What if I get the virus or what if so and so gets the virus?

All of these questions are legit challenges, but the phrase “Ride the Wave” is still there. Like a boat in a stormy sea or a surfer all that you can do is ride that wave. The surfer chose to be there and just like the surfer I chose to teach in order to make a difference in the community and in the life of my students so when the wave (e.g. virus, new procedures, etc..) comes along I just have to remember to “Ride the Wave”.
