Top Western KY Events: #38- Pre-Christmas 2022 Cold Snap

Making it to #38 on the list, is that time during the winter of 2022-23, when all of the cold air that would come down that winter (as the rest of the winter was record warm except for this event) came to visit. Essentially the entire winter of 2022-23, lasted 5 days but those 5 days featured the most brutal airmass since the 1980s and hit our area with very significant impacts.

Notable Impacts:

  • This event places about similar brutal Christmastime coldsnaps of 1983 and 1989, due to the impacts in infrastructure. Rolling blackouts were common and there were many reports of pipes bursting. With examples being school buildings in Marshall County, government buildings in Todd County, and several buildings across the area.
  • 1-4 inches of snow occurred with this brutal cold air and wind chills that peaked below -20F. This led to very hazardous travel issues across the entire holiday, lasting through the Christmas holiday. Leading to several Christmastime plans being canceled or postponed. Despite the traffic being limited there were hundreds of traffic accidents across the area.
  • Sadly there were several indirect fatalities due to this cold snap. With the cases being related to improper space heater/heating usage.
