Top Western KY Events: #30- Dec 26th, 1875 (The 2021 Foreshadow?)

The Tornado Project track of the 12/26/1875 tornado.

So far all of our events have occurred over the past 22 years, with the oldest event being the Providence/Nebo tornado of 2022 back at #35. This event occurred back in the 19th century with the only information provided coming from the Tornado Project website, which if you are into tornado history or tornado climatology is a great link.

Not much is known about the environment in which this tornado occurred at, but a deadly F/EF-3 tornado occurred in Fulton/Hickman/Graves Counties (with up to 5 fatalities) on the day after Christmas in 1875. This happened in the late afternoon/early evening hours. We know that this tornado was long-tracked as it started back in Lake/Obion Counties in TN. With such a long-track and significant tornado this tornado had to have occurred with either a discrete supercell or a semi-discrete supercell that was within a cluster or line.

Why Was This Significant

  • This was a long-tracked EF-3 (at least tornado) that tracked from NW TN through at least Mayfield. Because this was 1875 and information was limited, it is very possible if not likely that this tornado continued past Mayfield and may have even gone across Marshall or even Lyon County for all that we know. The technology wasn’t really there to quickly spread information across our area. We didn’t have scientists to differentiate between damaging winds or tornadoes. Modern meteorology with radar technology wasn’t invented till the events of World War II.
  • The interesting thing about this tornado was the similarities between this event and Dec 10th, 2021 (which if you follow this page or my Facebook page you know that will be a Top-10 event on this list). The time of year, the fact it came from a long-tracked supercell, and the areas of Fulton/Hickman/Graves counties that were impacted are all very Dec 2021-ish.
The track on the left is from the 1875 tornado and the track on the right is from the 12/10/2021 tornado. The 2021 tornado has a lot more detail due to the technology and all of the work completed on this tornado versus 1875.
